I had seen the ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturizing UV Lock Sunscreen SPF 45 mentioned often enough that I eventually had to try it for myself. ROUND LAB already has a reputation for making gentle, hydration-focused skincare, and the Birch Juice line in particular has become one of those K-beauty names that seems to come up whenever someone asks for a comfortable everyday sunscreen.

My skin is normal to combination, slightly dehydrated, and somewhat sensitive, particularly around my cheeks and eyes. I also prefer sunscreens that leave my skin looking healthy and hydrated rather than completely matte, so I tend to have a fairly specific idea of what works for me.

What caught my attention here was the combination of SPF 45 protection, Birch Sap, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and a no-white-cast finish. It sounded almost too good on paper, and I was curious whether the formula would actually be as easy to wear as the hype suggests.

Packaging & Design

The sunscreen comes in a 50 mL (1.69 fl. oz.) flexible squeeze tube with a narrow dispensing tip and a white cap. The design is unmistakably ROUND LAB: clean, minimalist, mostly white, with blue accents and delicate birch-inspired imagery.

I really like the narrow opening because it gives me much better control over the amount coming out. With sunscreen, that matters more than it might seem. I would rather squeeze out exactly what I need than have a large blob suddenly appear around the cap.

The tube is opaque, which helps protect the formula from light exposure, but it also means I cannot see how much sunscreen I have left. There is also a 10 mL mini version, which I think is a particularly practical addition for travel or keeping in my handbag for reapplication.

The U.S. packaging includes an English Drug Facts panel, and the opening is sealed before first use. Everything feels functional rather than unnecessarily elaborate, which suits the brand.

Sun Protection & Formula

This is a chemical sunscreen, using Avobenzone, Homosalate, and Octisalate as its active UV filters. Together, they provide broad-spectrum SPF 45 protection.

Avobenzone is particularly important here because it provides UVA protection, while Homosalate and Octisalate contribute primarily to UVB protection. The formula also contains supporting ingredients designed to help keep the sunscreen stable and evenly distributed on the skin.

What I found more interesting, though, is how much skincare has been built around the sunscreen rather than simply added as marketing decoration.

Key Ingredients

• Birch Tree Sap: The signature ingredient of the formula. It helps support hydration and gives the sunscreen its moisture-focused character.
• Niacinamide: Helps support the skin barrier while also contributing to a more even-looking complexion and balanced sebum production.
• Hyaluronic Acid: Helps attract and retain water, making the formula feel more hydrating.
• Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): A soothing ingredient that supports the skin barrier and helps calm the feeling of dryness.
• Allantoin: Helps soothe and comfort the skin.

I was initially a little skeptical about the idea of a sunscreen also functioning as a moisturizer. Too often, that promise means one or the other ends up compromised. In this case, though, the hydrating ingredients genuinely make sense alongside the UV filters.

The formula is also fragrance-free and does not contain Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, which helps explain why it can dry down without leaving a visible mineral cast.

One limitation is important: this sunscreen is not water resistant. That makes it much more appropriate for everyday urban use, commuting, errands, and light outdoor exposure than swimming, heavy sweating, or intense exercise.

Texture & Finish

The texture was one of the biggest reasons this sunscreen stayed in my routine. It comes out as a soft, slightly off-white lotion-essence, but once I start spreading it, it becomes much more fluid and glides easily across the skin.

It does not feel like I am dragging a thick layer of sunscreen across my face. Instead, the texture almost seems to loosen as I massage it in, making it easy to spread evenly over my cheeks, forehead, nose, and jawline.

The finish settles within roughly a couple of minutes and leaves my skin looking hydrated, smooth, and naturally radiant. There is no chalky residue and, importantly for me, no obvious white cast.

That transparent finish is one of the strongest features of the formula. I would have no hesitation recommending it to someone who normally avoids sunscreen because they dislike looking pale or powdery after application.

Despite the glow, I would not describe it as greasy. It has more of a fresh, moisturized appearance than an oily one, and it does not leave behind a heavy film.

Scent

This is a very easy sunscreen to recommend to people who dislike fragrance. It is fragrance-free and unscented, with no added perfume, essential oils, or masking fragrance.

When I first dispense it, I can detect a very faint raw-material smell, but it is subtle and disappears quickly as the sunscreen settles.

For me, that is exactly how I like it. I do not need my facial sunscreen to smell like flowers, citrus, or a beach vacation. The lack of added fragrance also makes the formula feel more appropriate for anyone who is cautious about potential fragrance-related irritation.

Skin Type & Compatibility

I think this sunscreen makes the most sense for normal, dry, combination, dehydrated, and sensitive skin.

My own combination skin responds well to the hydration because I can use it in the morning without automatically needing a separate heavy moisturizer underneath. The Birch Sap, Hyaluronic Acid, and Panthenol make the formula feel much more skincare-like than the typical sunscreen lotion.

For sensitive skin, I especially appreciate the fact that it is fragrance-free and has been evaluated for low irritation. The formula also carries a German Dermatest “Excellent” certification, which adds some reassurance for people who are more cautious about what they put on their face.

For acne-prone skin, the lightweight lotion texture is another plus. It does not have the thick, occlusive feel that some richer sunscreens can have.

Very oily skin is where I would be slightly more hesitant. The finish is not excessively greasy, but it is intentionally hydrated and radiant, so someone who wants a completely matte sunscreen may prefer a different formula.

Wearability & Daily Life

This is where I think the sunscreen really earns its place as an everyday product. It fits neatly into my morning routine because I can apply it after my skincare and move on to makeup without waiting forever for it to behave.

It also works well as a kind of hydrating primer, giving foundation, concealer, or BB cream a smoother surface to sit on. The formula is designed to resist pilling and does not leave me dealing with obvious flakes or little balls of sunscreen underneath makeup.

Another detail I appreciate is that it has no obvious flashback. Since there are no mineral filters like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, the sunscreen remains visually transparent, which is useful when I know I will be taking photographs.

Reapplication is manageable too. I can pat additional sunscreen onto bare skin, or press it over makeup with a sponge rather than completely disturbing the makeup underneath.

I just would not rely on this one for a sweaty outdoor workout. Since it is not water resistant, I would reach for a dedicated sport sunscreen for those situations.

Size, Lifespan, & Practicality

The standard tube contains 50 mL, which is a pretty typical facial sunscreen size. Using approximately 1.25 mL for a full facial application, the tube works out to around 40 days with one application per day, or approximately 20 days if I am applying a full dose twice a day.

Of course, real-life usage varies because many of us also apply sunscreen to the neck and ears. I would rather finish the tube sooner while applying enough than make it last longer by skimping on the amount.

The flexible tube makes it easy to squeeze out product efficiently, and the narrow opening keeps dispensing controlled. The mini size also makes practical sense for travel and carrying around for reapplication.

One thing I would keep in mind is clothing. Because the sunscreen contains Avobenzone, there is a possibility of staining white fabrics under certain conditions involving sweat and hard water. Letting it dry completely before getting dressed is a simple precaution.

Brand Reputation & Ethics

ROUND LAB has built much of its identity around uncomplicated, hydration-focused Korean skincare, and the Birch Juice line fits that philosophy well.

The U.S. version of this sunscreen is particularly interesting because it was formulated specifically to meet U.S. FDA OTC sunscreen requirements, rather than simply being the Korean-market sunscreen sold through unofficial channels. It is manufactured in South Korea by Kolmar Korea.

The product has also received considerable attention from beauty publications and testing outlets, including recognition from NBC Select, Oprah Daily, and Allure. The Birch Juice sunscreen line has also earned strong recognition in South Korean beauty retail.

From an ethics perspective, the formula is cruelty-free and excludes Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Those details do not make a sunscreen automatically perfect from an environmental standpoint, but I still appreciate seeing those choices considered in the formulation.

Price, Value, & Availability

The full-size sunscreen is positioned above a basic drugstore sunscreen, with a U.S. MSRP of around $22 to $28 for 50 mL. However, promotional pricing can bring it considerably lower, sometimes into the $10 to $17 range.

At full price, I think its value depends heavily on whether you appreciate the moisturizing aspect. For me, the ability to use it as both morning moisturizer and sunscreen makes the price easier to justify.

At a sale price, I think it becomes an especially attractive option because the formula combines comfortable SPF protection, hydration, makeup compatibility, and a completely invisible finish.

The availability of an official U.S. version through established retailers is another advantage. I generally prefer buying sunscreen through reliable distribution channels rather than gambling on questionable imported listings.

Tips & Recommendations

I would use approximately a quarter teaspoon, or around 1.25 mL, for the face, and I would make sunscreen the final step of my morning skincare routine before makeup. Applying it around 15 minutes before sun exposure gives the sunscreen time to form its protective film.

The biggest recommendation I would give is to use this according to its strengths. It is an excellent candidate for everyday commuting, office days, errands, casual outdoor time, and makeup-heavy mornings when I want my sunscreen to look and feel like skincare.

I would skip it for swimming, intense exercise, or prolonged exposure where heavy sweating is expected. In those situations, I would choose a water-resistant sunscreen instead.

For anyone with dehydrated, sensitive, normal, or combination skin who has struggled to find a sunscreen that feels moisturizing without leaving a white cast, this is one I would absolutely put on the shortlist. Its biggest achievement is not that it feels revolutionary—it is that it makes wearing enough sunscreen every day feel genuinely easy.
